The Art of Case Studies: Crafting Your Design Story

As brand designers, our past projects are more than just portfolio pieces – stories waiting to be told. Each case study is an opportunity to showcase what we created and the journey, challenges, and triumphs that shaped the final result.

The Power of Documentation

While keeping your website updated with recent work can feel daunting (especially after wrapping up a two-year project!), it's crucial to attracting the right clients. A well-crafted case study does more than display pretty designs—it demonstrates your problem-solving abilities, showcases your industry versatility, and tells the unique story behind each brand transformation.

My Process

From Sketch to Story Before diving into the digital build of a case study, I start with a sketch pad. Here's why:

  1. Content Curation: I gather all essential elements—color palettes, icons, collateral pieces—and decide which best illustrates the project's journey.

  2. Visual Planning: Sketching helps me envision how these elements flow together on the page, ensuring each piece serves the larger narrative.

  3. Interactive Elements: I consider unique ways to showcase the work. For instance, I implemented an image comparison slider in a recent case study to demonstrate the logo transformation—a simple yet effective way to highlight the before-and-after impact.

The Art of Differentiation

Every client brings unique challenges and opportunities. Your case studies should reflect this diversity. Whether highlighting an innovative solution to a specific industry challenge or showcasing a particularly successful collaboration, each story deserves its spotlight.

Remember your case studies aren't just work documents; they demonstrate your ability to understand, solve, and communicate complex design challenges. This storytelling skill can set you apart from other designers.
