How Has the Pandemic Affected My Small Design Business?

The pandemic definitely played a big role in forcing me to look at my services and figure out other revenue streams.

My business did take a strange path over the past couple of years!  At first, many were afraid to spend the money and either paused or cancelled their projects. But then after we all realized we were in this for the long haul, I got extremely busy... In fact, 2021 was the most lucrative year in quite a while.

I began getting contacted by several early-stage companies who were looking for contract Art Directors. So I quickly pivoted and offered monthly retainer services. This way I could offer them my expertise in both branding and graphic design over the course of time rather than just doing one-off projects.

Another service I began offering was doing brand refreshes rather than starting from ground zero. Some companies have ideas, just do not know how to execute. This is more economical and I usually deliver a simplified, cleaned up version of their logo along with a style guide. In some cases, companies have basic branding but need a "look & feel" developed, in which case I'd deliver a mood board.

Lastly, I partnered with a small agency to work with bigger clients. This is a great way to charge a little more than normal and work on more focused projects over a shorter amount of time.

I am grateful that I did have quite a bit of small business rebrands in the mix as well since those are my favorite!
